Herbal Chemistry Hub

This is the Chemistry Hub, the slightly nerdy and weirder corner of The Herbal Medic.

Here I’ve created a Herbal Chemistry Hub as a revision aid and a way to make chemistry actually stick, using my odd imagination and slightly warped sense of humour to bring functional groups to life. In the more sensible section, you’ll find herbal chemical constituents with 3D molecules you can spin, zoom, and explore, linking structure to how plant compounds behave. This hub is for anyone studying herbal medicine… or just genuinely curious about what’s going on inside herbs.

All content here is for educational and herbal study purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

The Functional Groups

Functional groups are the little “character traits” on a molecule that decide how it behaves, whether it’s calm, reactive, acidic, basic, or just a bit dramatic. If you’re revising for exams, or trying to understand what’s in your favourite herbs, recognising these groups is non-negotiable.
In this section, we’ll walk through the key players: alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, alcohols, carbonyls, amines and more, explained, hopefully, using funny images created using AI and my weird imagination.

The Functional Groups

Chemical Constituents

Explore the key chemical constituents found in medicinal plants.
Use the 3D models to spin, zoom, and get a feel for its shape while you learn how it shows up in herbs and traditional herbal practice.

Polyphenols

More coming soon… I’m still learning this stuff.
